It was only a matter of time before the folks behind the wildly successful WOW series turned their eyes toward Christmas. After all, holiday releases by Christian artists flood the market every year, and there's plenty of stock to choose from. WOW Christmas does, indeed, capture a nice range of styles and artists from releases over the last few years. Among the sweeter moments are Michael W. Smith's new standard, "Emmanuel," Point of Grace's angelic "O Holy Night," Rebecca St. James's quirky "Sweet Little Jesus Boy," and the Mark Schultz-Nichole Nordeman gentle treatment of "Silent Night." There are a couple of curiosities here, as well: Avalon jazzing up the old standard "Winter Wonderland" with a Manhattan Transfer-like big-band sound; and Fred Hammond's soulful "Go Tell It on the Mountain." And if that's not offbeat enough, we also get the flat-out weirdness of Audio Adrenaline's punked-out "Little Drummer Boy." For the most part, though, WOW Christmas spices up the classic Yule tunes with freshness and creativity, making it a must disc for your holiday party. --Michael Lyttle

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing   December 25, 2007

I love Christian music and I love Christmas music, so I thought this album would be the perfect combination for the holiday season and I couldn't wait to pop it in and usher in the yule tide. I was sorely disappointed. I can appreciate the effort to update traditional music and put a fresh spin on classics, but most of these songs were nearly unrecognizable and that's not what I want in my Christmas music. I want to spend the season listening to beloved favorites and sing my heart out to them for the month or so that we have together...Not scratching my head and trying to figure out the music. I was also surprised by the R&B flavor to a lot of the songs. Again, nothing wrong with that genre of music, just not what I expect and find comforting in my Christmas music.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and joyful Christmas CD   November 22, 2007

Thanks again to the musicians who did the songs for this WoW CD. I always look forward to different variations of Christmas songs!! It's nice to have the variety that WoW CD's offer. They're a definate inspiration and wonderful alternative to some of the music out there!

4 out of 5 stars Even my Granddaughter loves this CD   January 10, 2007
D. Crosman (Maine)
Yes, even my seven year old granddaughter loves to listen to this Christmas CD. I like the diversity of the songs and the entertainers. I loved the way some of the old standards were done, especially Emmanuel, Let It Snow, and Away in the Manger. Plus there are some songs I had never heard before and they were good.
But, the only thing I didn't like was, some of the old standards were (I felt) were terrible. Like Do You Hear What I Hear, Joy to the World, and Little Drummer Boy. But my granddaughter liked them.

4 out of 5 stars Some Very Good Songs, Some Not So Good   November 25, 2006

This is a collection of mostly familiar Christmas songs done with a modern twist.

While I didn't really like several of the arrangements here, there were also many others that were very good. Due to the diversity of musical tastes, this collection has something that virtually everyone will like. On the other hand, most will find some that they do not appreciate as much.

Some really good arrangements were done by the following artists: Point of Grace, 4Him, Nichole C. Mullen, Mark Schultz and Nichole Nordeman, Kathy Mattea, Third Day, Jennifer Knapp, MercyMe, Jars of Clay, and Rebecca St. James.

Overall, this is a worthwhile CD set.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!!   December 19, 2005

This is one of my favourite Christmas music collections, along with Donna Summer's classy 'Christmas Spirit'. The name really says it all, wow!!!

Ranging in style from jazzy treatments, to alternative rock to urban, this is a collection of perrennial favourites redone (and in some cases drastically redone) by most of contemporary Christian music's best. This might not appeal to some but I love the different treatments.

Disc one has the swinging jazzy treatment of 'Winter wonderland' by Avalon featuring the tight harmonies they are known for. 'Strange way to save the world' is a beautiful ballad by 4Him with lyrics about God's choice to send a baby in a manger to save us all. There is the melodramatic 'Emmanuel' by Michael W Smith, the stunning acoustic treatment of 'O come, o come, Emmanuel' by Nicole C Mullen (check out her brilliant 'Christmas in black and white' CD), the celebratory 'Hallelujah' by Soulful Celebration, the soul/gospel choir sound of Kirk Franklin's 'The night that Christ was born, and the awesome 'Mary did you know' by Kathy Mattea, with lyrics asking Mary if she knew the baby she was carrying would one day walk on water and be the saviour of the whole world.

Disc 2 is more rock laced and edgier; 'Do you hear what I hear' by Third Day, an acoustic 'What child is this' by MercyMe, the rocky 'Little drummer boy' by Audio Adrenaline, a soulful rendition of 'O little town of Bethlehem' by Out of Eden, complete with a much needed prayer for peace on earth, the driving rock/pop of 'Angels we have heard on high' by ZOEgirl, 'O little town of Bethlehem' by Caedmon's call, a wonderful slow shuffling performance of 'Christmastime is here' by Sixpence none the richer, the acoustic 'God rest ye merry gentlemen' by Jars of clay featuring excellent harmonising, and the hip hop 'This Christmas (joy to the world)' by TobyMac.

If you are looking for a beautiful, experimental collection of Christmas music with the message of Christmas told, this is the CD for you.
