Amazon.com An album like this could cement Sarah McLachlan as a middle-of-the-road crooner ready for the Andy Williams Christmas Show, but there's more beneath the surface of Wintersong than just Christmas chestnuts, over-roasting on an open fire. Longtime McLachlan producer Pierre Marchand blurs the borders with ambient sound effects, distorted guitars, and subtle echoes. He adds a Mark Isham-esque muted trumpet solo emerging out of reverse echoes on "I'll Be Home for Christmas" as if viewing the song through a distorted mirror. Violins that sound like they're being blown through a Leslie speaker combine unpredictably with a banjo on "O Little Town of Bethlehem." And on the seventh song, McLachlan finally kicks the album into another gear, turning "The First Noel" into a storming entreaty backed by tribal drums and surging low strings. Her voice is like the serene angel amidst the raging storm. I wish McLachlan had taken more chances like this, instead of the subtle framing she employs around melodies that remain true to form. Surprisingly, the more contemporary songs by John Lennon, Joni Mitchell, and Gordon Lightfoot are the least inventive. Her reading of Mitchell's incandescently wistful "River" is overly faithful to the original, and Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" sounds like karaoke, right down to the Spector-esque production and children's choir. But given that Lennon's prayer for peace still remains unanswered, that fidelity could be intentional. Regardless, this is familiar Christmas fare delivered in an intimate and ethereal fashion that will satisfy those who believe in the nostalgic spirit of the season. --John Diliberto More from Sarah McLachlan Mirrorball: The Complete Concert | Surfacing | Fumbling Towards Ecstasy | Afterglow | VH1 Storytellers: Sarah McLachlan (DVD) | Solace |

Peaceful Christmas Songs December 5, 2008 CherryCarey (Southwest Washington) I am confused and disappointed by the negative reviews of this album. I didn't find this CD boring at all and I thoroughly enjoyed her renditions of classic Christmas songs and hymns. It's true, there is nothing fast or upbeat about this CD, it's more calm and peaceful, which is quite nice when you're in the midst of the holiday rush.
my favorite Christmas album December 3, 2008 Barbara Rice This album is the opposite of the piped-in Muzak at the mall. There's real emotion and feeling here, not a Santa Claus or snowman in sight: these songs focus on the emotional aspects of the holiday. If you love "The Little Drummer Boy" and "Here Comes Santa Claus" type of carols, this might not be for you: too moody and introspective. But if you're looking for Christmas music that isn't the usual background "sounds of the season," you might wind up loving this.
Can't stop listening November 23, 2008 M. Orton (USA) I haven't been able to stop listening to this CD. I love it! It is perfect for a winter night. Each song has the unique flavor only Sarah McLachlan can give. Beware that The First Noel is pretty different, but it is awesome! And I love her take on What Child is This and In The Bleak Mid Winter. Very good CD. I highly recomment it.
Wintersong A+ November 14, 2008 R. Crabtree (Wyoming) This is a wonderful album, unlike any Christmas album you have heard before. I've bought one for every friend and family member. You will too.
Unrecognizable October 27, 2008 Aaron J. Moyer (Dayton, OH) 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
For rabid fans only! The warbling, swoops, scoops, and drops are never ending and made me dizzy. This left me thinking, "Can she hit a note?" Based on her vocal, the songs are unrecognizable. I tried listening to the cd several times, but have decided to give up and give it away.
