Great alternative to all of the newer X-mas albums November 28, 2004 R. Girl (Chicago, IL) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I really love this CD -- you may have to listen to it a few times before it grows on you, but once it does, it will be a holiday favorite. My grandfather brought a Spike Jones record home to my mom and her sisters decades ago, and now even the grandchildren in the family appreciate these arrangements. Yes, a lot of this album is done in a more serious, choral way -- but the arrangements and singing are much more interesting than all of the boring holiday albums that have come out in the past few years. And some of these songs are just fun -- again, they provide something different. I can't take another singer-of-the-moment holiday cover album -- most disappoint. This is worth the purchase! :)

As a Spike Jones fan, I was seriously disappointed with this album. Practically none of the album is done in Spike's zany style. Most of the songs are sung by a choir in a "serious" style. I guess it's okay for what it is, but I personally find it to be very boring. Spike's old band the City Slickers are absent from this album, with the exception of George Rock, who sings a few songs in his "little boy" voice. The songs sung by George are the highlights for me, although his "All I Want For Christmas is My Two Front Teeth" is not the classic hit version, but rather it's a vastly inferior rerecording. He also sings "My Birthday Comes on Christmas", "Angel in the Christmas Play" and "Santa Claus' Son". These are okay novelty songs, with "Santa Claus' Son" being the best of them. I can't recommend this album, unless you happen to like choral singing.
