If you thrill to the soaring operatic voices of The Three Tenors (and imagine every Christmas comes with its own orchestral majesty), Il Divo has made this disc for you. The four GQ-handsome male singers were handpicked by American Idol's Simon Cowell for what seems to be their ability to sing opera and classical music with the hint of a pop sensibility. Their Christmas Collection features 10 standards (although the last time Santa looked, he wasn't quite sure "Over the Rainbow" and "The Lord's Prayer" were part of the Christmas canon). Still, it' hard not to imagine these emotionally stirring renditions as part and parcel of the reverential treatment the four finely sculpted voices bring to more exact seasonal fare such as "O Holy Night," "Ave Maria," "Panis Angelicus" and even "White Christmas." Dave Arch's predictable choral and orchestral arrangements are aimed right at the sweet spot where sophisticated church choir music and traditional classical music meet, with few surprises other than the dash of Irish folk music that colors "When A Child Is Born." In the end, for people who have never heard of Cowell and his cohosts (would Paula Abdul really have picked the tenor guy for this group?!), this collection will prove just as rewarding for them as the best-selling Idol records are for fans of the TV stars. --Martin Keller

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Christmas Music   November 29, 2008
LovingHeartMommy (Norfolk,VA)
The Christmas Collection by Il Divo is a collection of the most popular Christmas songs all sung in perfect harmony, simply beautiful and moving!

My favorites were "O Holy Night", "White Christmas" and "Silent Night". Their beautiful vocals will instantly put you in a joyful mood this Holiday Season!

4 out of 5 stars A CHRISTMAS RAINBOW?   November 15, 2008
Judy (Matawan NJ)
I have never been disappointed with the sound of Il Divo. And their renditions of these Christmas songs is absolutely beautiful. But ... "Over the Rainbow"??? There are only 10 songs on this CD to begin with. You mean they could not come up with one more Christmas song to include here instead of "Over the Rainbow"? A little miffed at that, so I gave this magnificent CD 4 stars instead of 5.

I have contacted this seller twice since ordering with no reply. The CD didn't come so I guess I can't review it. I can however review the seller: poor. This has never happened to me thru Amazon so guess how I'm feeling???

5 out of 5 stars Christmas faves   April 24, 2008

I'm in love with these young men's voices! Il Divo will be playing in my house every Christmas from now on.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!   March 23, 2008
Darlene (San Diego, CA United States)
This CD remains in my car and is played year-round -- WONDERFUL, goosebump-provoking voices, and very complementary harmonizing and blending. (I've never been a fan of the song, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," and, despite other reviewers' explanations, I still don't think it belongs in a Christmas collection -- but I HIGHLY recommend this CD in general, as ALL of the songs are performed beautifully)!

Prior to the release of this recording, my all-time favorite version of "Oh Holy Night" was sung by Pavarotti -- but the Il Divo version is also absolutely breathtaking!

This CD was my first exposure to Il Divo (I know -- it seems unbelievable, in light of their popularity), but it has inspired me to purchase more of their CD's (I prefer the songs which they sing in English, since comprehension of the lyrics certainly stirs the emotions to a greater degree -- "Every Time I Look at You" is one of my favorites), and I am now going to order one of their DVD's, so I can actually SEE them perform (I rarely watch TV, so this will be a "first" for me, too). I am also going to order copies of this CD to give to friends next Christmas, and I'm hoping that Il Divo will release more Christmas collections in the future.

I've read the reviews of those who have posted negative comments, accusing the producers and promoters of Il Divo of "crass commercialism," but I am VERY THANKFUL to Simon Cowell, et al, for having brought these VERY TALENTED AND DIGNIFIED GENTLEMEN together -- and for having provided them the opportunity to share their musical gifts with all of us. BRAVO! -- SUCH a breath of fresh air, under the label of "popular music." One can only hope that this trend continues.
