A nice change of pace for the holidays January 6, 2009 Jacob C. Shore (, USA) This is pleasant alternative to the beloved (but tiresome) classic Christmas songs we constantly hear on the radio. It's a great blend of well known Christmas songs arranged in new and interesting ways (Little Drummer Boy, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen) along with some great original music (Love Came Down at Christmas, Peace is here). I'm not a big Jars of Clay fan, but I really liked this one.
Great even for those whom are not Christmas Music Fans January 1, 2009 Joshua Banker (Clovis, CA) One thing I dred during the Christmas season is the many repeatitive annoying Christmas songs that play over the intercom system at retail stores across this country. It annoys me so much, if someone were to ask me if I like Christmas music I typically say no. Well in reality I do enjoy Christmas albums that are well thought out and not over the top. Some of the best are ones that the artists treat like it is a regular album. "Christmas Songs" by Jars of Clay is a good example of that. It has the perfect mix of new songs along old classics that are arranged to sound like classic Jars tunes. This year I played it in the background while I was at work and I tended to enjoy this one the most this year. Very relaxing and very festive. Another album I would recommend if you like this one is "My Holiday" by Mindy Smith. Her style is not all that different from Jars of Clay.
Not That Great December 26, 2008 S. Peek (Rocky Mountains, USA) Let me start out by saying that I am a big fan of Jars of Clay. I own most of their albums and love many of their songs. I consider several of their tunes to be among my all time favorites. For that reason, I had really looked forward to hearing their Christmas CD. I was expecting to hear many holiday favorites spiced up with that great JOC sound. Sadly, that is not the case. Although a few of the songs are very good (God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Drummer Boy), most of them are merely ok to good. Some of the songs such as the ones above are remakes of well known songs. There are also a few originals. Listeners who simply must have everything that this group puts out may want to get this one. Otherwise, this may be one to skip.
The First Jars Album I Have Ever Found Disappointing. March 12, 2008 A. Dykshorn (Chicagoland) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
With each new album that Jars of Clay has released I have always found myself quite pleased with the results. For the first time this is not the case. I was quite disappointed with this release. I believe most, if not all, of this disappointment came from an expectation that Jars would use their talents to create new contemporary takes on classic carols. What I found was a collection of carols so changed from the originals that with out the familiar lyrics I would of had no idea that these were well known Christmas carols that I had heard throughout my life. I have no problem with a group taking age old songs and reworking them and making them there own, but what I do expect is that I should be able to recognize the songs from melodies. When it comes down to it these are really just new songs that borrow the lyrics of classic carols.
Good album, nice change from traditional Christmas music... January 23, 2008 Mom of Two (PA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Definitely has the Jars of Clay sound to it. A mix of traditional and original Christmas songs, so a nice addition to your collection if you (like me) have a bunch of different people/groups recording the same old songs. A bit mellow (or perhaps melancholy) sounding for some of the songs -- very peaceful to listen to but not a dancing CD (to my little kids' disappointment). If you like Jars of Clay I think you would like this.
