Amazon.com Renee Fleming, a.k.a. "The Beautiful Voice," is in fine form here, the voice gleaming with radiance in a November 2005 concert in Mainz Cathedral. With an orchestra under the baton of early music guru Trevor Pinnock, she opens with an abundantly embellished "Rejoice greatly," from Handel's Messiah and ends with Adolphe Adam's Christmas staple, "O Holy night" in a soupy arrangement by Chris Hazell. The musical highlights are the "Laudamus te" from Mozart's Mass in C minor and "L'Adieu des bergers" from Berlioz's L'Enfance du Christ, the former exciting for its coloratura, the latter a touch fussy, while in other selections, tonal beauty is bought with mushy diction. Chorus and orchestra get several selections for themselves, but the spotlight's on Fleming, very much the decollete gowned diva. Mainz Cathedral is a handsome structure whose graceful columns and vaulted ceiling make for interesting visuals that complement the music. Added bonus songs include Bernstein's "A Simple Song" from his Mass, and a pair of traditional items including "Silent Night," these shot in front of a creche and a Christmas tree with singer and accompanists wrapped in winter clothes. Extras include still photos and a film about the cathedral. Fleming's fans will snap this up. --Dan Davis

Renee Fleming: Sacred Songs May 19, 2008 Robert A. Hawkins 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have not received this item. When I checked on the status of the delivery, I saw that it had accidentally been sent to my old (more than two yers ago) address at 652 Roxboro Trace, Lawrenceville, GA and was returned to sender. The correct address should have been 635 Talon View Court, Auburn, GA 30011. If this problem can be resolved, I would like to receive this item.
Brava! January 7, 2008 M (CA) I bought this for myself for Christmas and love it! there's not much more I can say that hasn't been said, but wanted to make it an even 10 for Renee! What is also great besides Renee is the gorgeous Mainz Cathedral itself. I recommend the "bonus features" almost as much! Amazing history of the 1000 (!) yr old Cathedral told to us (via subtitles). We also see the history of the boys choir and it was all so interesting. Renee of course, is still the star and with the fabulous acoustics the sound is great. You'd not believe such a small orchestra could sound so big. The best in my opinion was Renee's version of "Ave Maria", done live and perfectly, then a 2nd time as a music video of sorts, in the "bonus features". There she is just as good and twice as gorgeous (green works well for her). I found myself hitting "repeat" a few times. Such a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice.....must be nice. Another highlight is "Oh Holy Night", Renee hits the high note and then everything stops while it echos...goose bump time! What a crime it's only a "Christmas song". Anyway if only a minor fan or new to Opera, you'll fall in love with it - and Renee.

Lovely lady with the Golden Voice May 28, 2007 George A. Mann (Fort Smith, Arkansas) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Renee Fleming has been one of my favorite sopranos for several years now. As a voice teacher and an accompanist, I find her voice contains that rare combination of depth and brilliance, solidity and flexibility that is a rare and illusive. Her CDs and DVDs are never more than a short reach from my stereo or television. When you combine her singing with my favorite time of year, Christmas, and my favorite European destination, Germany, you have a treat which cannot be surpassed. Her voice, soaring through the Cathedral of Mainz, is like a precious stone in an exquisite setting, and provides a muscial experience that transports me to that place and time at every hearing.
