Amazon.com essential recording
Mel Torme is so famous for writing "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)," it's surprising that he never recorded a full Christmas album before 1992's Christmas Songs. Besides that standard, Torme's own compositions here include the heartfelt "The Christmas Feeling" and "Christmas Was Made for Children." He also sings Johnny Mercer's Christmas lyrics for "Glow Worm" as well as more traditional fare. Backed by both orchestra and big band, Torme is alternately swinging and sentimental on this instant classic. --David Horiuchi

My husband was always waiting for Mel's version of "The Christmas Song" to play on the radio...which it rarely did. He can now hear this and many other wonderful Christmas pieces whenever he wants. A GREAT CD.

This is an excellant Christmas album and I would strongly reccomend it. It's a mixture of traditional and jazzed up holiday music.

Until a few years ago, I thought they were calling him the Golden Frog, and I couldn't understand why it was a compliment. I have it figured out now. This album has my favorite version of "Good King Wenceslaus"--what a crazy cat!

Let me make this simple, the first my wife heard this Christmas album in early December while driving in the car she simply fell in love with it. The uptempo songs and slow songs of season have never sounded better by anyone. When my son heard this album for the 1st time he started singing and tapping his toe right away. This is simply the greatest Christmas album ever recorded!!
