Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
New Orleans Christmas captures the unique and vibrant voice of this city with a collection of holiday favorites decked in the blues, jazz and swing flavors the Crescent City is famous for.

The album opens with a familiar favorite as Big Al Carson and Academy Award-winning Lars Edegran put a big band twist on Santa Claus is Coming to Town. Home-town favorite James Andrews summons up the spirit of New Orleans Christmas past, as the gravelly tones of his voice and trumpet evoke the raspy vocals of the great Louis Armstrong on Christmas in New Orleans. Other tunes get new twists as a bevy of notable musicians put their signature touches on the holiday classics: Ellis Marsalis tickles the ivories to bring new life into God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, while the internationally-known John Boutte dreams for snow to fall on the usually-warm city of his birth on his version of White Christmas, recording especially for this collection. Trumpeter and bandleader Gregg Stafford leads the Heritage Hall Jazz Band on their respectful and understated treatment of Silver Bells.

Not to be forgotten, the new school of New Orleans music is also helping to get the jingle bells rockin'. The New Birth Brass Band gets the big guy dancing on Santa's Second Line, while Ingrid Lucia, a recent settler in the New Orleans area, teases the chords and the man in red on the playful Zat You, Santa Claus? Papa Don Vappie, The Dukes of Dixieland, Banu Gibson, and Topsy Chapman round out this musical feast of holiday proportions.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of New Orleans Christmas will be donated to New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity in support of their Musicians Village Project.

5 out of 5 stars New Orleans Christmas bt Putumayo   December 18, 2007
Erica Viezner (Canada)
New Orleans Christmas Here I though it would be just another one of those endless Christmas collections, but this is a totally great music - every single selection. Up-beat,refreshingly different arrangements, very enjoyable listening.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!   November 28, 2007
Fred Camfield (Vicksburg, MS USA)
Picture in your mind a jazz band playing in the French Quarter. Then picture the band playing Christmas music. These are unique arrangements. The CD starts with a jazzy wake-you-up version of Santa Claus is Comin' to Town. That is followed by a laid back Christmas in New Orleans, followed next by a novelty piece (female vocalist) Zat You Santa Claus?

The fourth number goes back to a jazzy style with a version of Silver Bells that you will probably not hear outside the Big Easy (city sidewalks will never be the same). There are a total of 11 selections with a total playing time of perhaps 40 minutes. I highly recommend the CD for anyone wanting some upbeat Christmas music.

Having bought this for myself at one of my favorite shops in downtown Vicksburg (Art and Soul), I now need to go back and get a second copy to give someone as a gift.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas with a N'awlins flair   August 6, 2007
T. Edwards (Ohio, USA)
I found this compilation to be an excellent example of the different styles of music and culture in around the New Orleans area. While a bit sad, especially when thought of in context of the Katrina aftermath, I thought buying the disc one way someone might support the area in its attempts to rebuild and flourish again. Most certainly, it is a way to keep these styles of music alive and well, and could possibly stimulate interest in the artists featured on the compilation.
The compilation works well on two levels. The selection of tunes illustrates well the spirit of Christmas as it pertains to New Orleans. For someone who likes music with a traditional blues/jazz feel, this compilation would also be a nice one to have in a collection.
For someone who likes to collect different varieties of holiday music, this would be an especially nice disc to have. The quality is great; plenty of information in the liner notes on the artists for those wishing to learn more about them is a plus. And lastly, for someone wanting to throw a New Orleans-themed Christmas party this would definitely help to make the season right!!

5 out of 5 stars Time to introduce a new tradional music to your Christmas   January 19, 2007

This is a collection that is long overdue. "Christmas in New Orleans" literally flew out the door of my local bookstore when they put it on a demo this last December. This is a very positive and jazzy CD that is essential for people who enjoy celebrating Christmas from a variety of traditions.

5 out of 5 stars Great, fun New Orleans music.   January 18, 2007

I gave this CD to my Texas friends before Christmas. They loved listening to it. One friend said that she even sat in the car listening for a while until the CD was over. It's very energetic and happy music.
