4 out of 5 stars Flawed, but nice that its available.   November 10, 2006

I was pretty disappointed when I first received this CD. It was certainly better than my Dad's old scratchy mono LP, but the sound on the CD was muddy. It turns out that much of the muddiness of the CD is due to a 60Hz hum that is relatively constant throughout (although it does come and go). Fortunately, this hum can be removed with virtually no deleterious effects on the music through the use of a narrow 60Hz notch filter. I did this by extracting the tracks to an uncompressed .aiff file, then used the free open source application Audacity to open the individual files. Using the free Nyquist notch filter plug-in for Audacity, I then applied this filter (using the default 60Hz setting) to each track then burned them back to CD. This resulted in a drastic improvement to the sound. I should note that I also purchased a near mint copy of the original LP off of ebay that also contains the hum, so I suspect this is was an issue with the original source material, not the CD. If you don't remember this hum from your childhood, it may be because older playback equipment was not as revealing of low frequency effects like this.

5 out of 5 stars this is where it's at for GLORIOUS old school sound....   December 11, 2005

As the other reviewer mentioned, there may also be another version of this available, but this original, old recording from the 1950's is timeless... Music recorded like this has the nostalgic sound that many of us treasure... I can't visualize trying to produce a superduper-remastered version of this album, and then listening to it on a $100,000 sound system. This is the sound of an old, innocent Christmas...

1 out of 5 stars Shame on RCA   December 9, 2005

This wonderful collection from the 50's is spoiled by an abysmal mono transfer by RCA. Some of the selections are available on "A Festival Of Carols / Robert Shaw Chorale" in a much better stereo transfer, and the album also includes the original "Many Moods of Christmas" Shaw album.

5 out of 5 stars Excellence and good taste; deeply moving Christmas music   July 1, 1999

I first bought this offering on 33 rpm discs in - perhaps - 1956. My children grew up with this music and loved it every year. Though I have about twenty different recordings of Christmas music, this is the one we always return to. It is the standard by which all others may be measured. Excellent!
