Amazon.com essential video
Accept no substitutes. The 1966 television adaptation of Dr. Seuss' timeless book How the Grinch Stole Christmas!--about an anti-Santa who tries to heist the holiday only to learn a powerful lesson--is a classic in its own right, and looking better than ever in its 50th Birthday Deluxe Edition. (For those doing the math, the 50 years is counting from the book's 1957 publishing date rather than the show's broadcast date.) The most significant improvement is in the digital transfer, cleaning up fuzz and specks and restoring the proper colors to the program. While the awful earlier DVDs showed the Grinch in a mustard-yellow color, this edition restores his proper green gleam. Special features are mostly ported over from the previous DVD--the Horton Hears a Who program, a featurette on the songs, Phil Hartman's special edition version, pencil tests, etc. minus the commentary track--but there is a new 15-minute featurette, "Dr. Seuss and the Grinch: From Whoville to Hollywood." While it starts out as a fluff piece aimed at the younger set (interviews with kids, some rapping), it does provide some interesting information, including interviews with the widows of Theodore Geisel and Chuck Jones and clips of Geisel and Jones' Private Snafu. (No mention of Jim Carrey, however.) --David Horiuchi

What is christmas without the classic Grinch who stole Christmas. Boris Karloffs narrative and the Dr Seuss tale create a timeless classic loved by those young and old. A great treat for the whole family to watch. Ill have my 2 girls and wife together to watch this classic and bring in the holidays the way it should be. DOnt forget little cindy lou who ,who was no more than 2. CLASSIC

5 out of 5 stars It Isn't Christmas Without The Grinch   November 16, 2008
Jason Knapp (New York, NY, USA)
Dr. (Theodore Geisel) Seuss's story of a mean-spirited creature who discovers the real meaning of the holiday was a lovely story to begin with. But director Chuck Jones's contribution made the story truly poignant.

During the war, the two had collaborated on a series of animated shorts for service men featuring Private Snafu. Afterward, Jones returned to directing those wonderful animated shorts from Warner Brothers and Seuss went on to write a score of children's books. Their reunion produced this seamless blend of heartfelt sentiment refracted through the lens of a Looney Tunes sensibility.

Veteran voice actors help to round out the piece, but it's Boris Karloff's brilliant story telling and his voice of the Grinch we remember.

5 out of 5 stars A True Classic   November 14, 2008

I waited each to see some of my favorite shows as a child, Rudolph, Frosty and of course the Grinch.

I never grew tired of these shows when I was younger and they still entrhall me, and my child, today.

This is a great version of the Grinch in terms of the quality of the video and if you like the show, it is a worthwhile addition so you can see it more than just once a year.

5 out of 5 stars Ahhh, memories...   November 12, 2008

I absolutely love my copy of How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Horton Hears a Who. I did not notice any color variations or strange sound effects, so I'm guessing some people received a bad copy. However, this version is wonderful! I enjoyed reading Dr. Seuss growing up and this movie brings up happy childhood memories of Christmas! This is a great Christmas story for all ages with a good message behind it!

1 out of 5 stars An insult to the source material   October 8, 2008

Dr. Seuss' classic holiday story was already adapted for the screen in a beloved animated version by Chuck Jones. This gratingly unfunny retread fails its predecessors in every way. It's just awful.
