Product Description Barbie plays two roles in the story of the nutcracker. Genre: Children's Video Rating: NR Release Date: 22-AUG-2006 Media Type: DVD
Amazon.com Look who became a star. Barbie comes to life in this computer-animated Christmas tale that quite naturally takes the longtime favorite doll into a new realm. The plot is a slight variation on the traditional ballet based on Tchaikovsky's music. Instead of being in an open-ended dream, Barbie and her escort, the Nutcracker (soon to be Ken, natch), are on an adventurous quest. Along the way there are more creatures and derring-do than in the original. The sole known voice talent, Tim Curry, has a good old time as the Mouse King, and the animated dancing is gracefully adapted from New York City Ballet choreography. A few clever characters, bright animation, and wonderful music should entrance any Barbie fans ages 3 to 9. The 78-minute feature debuted on video shortly before playing on CBS in 2001. --Doug Thomas

Who Knew! February 12, 2008 Mollie T. Williamson (New Orleans, LA USA) My daughter is obsessed with ballet and The Barbie Nutcracker is one of her favorite videos. She can now hear the music on classical radio and identify which part of The Nutcracker it is from. Amazing. I had no idea how good the Barbie videos where. The music is beautiful and they are really wonderful to watch - even for adults. Which is nice when you have to watch them over and over and over..........
Barbie in the Nutcracker February 9, 2008 Guylaine (Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec Canada) My daugther love it, this was the only one missing from her collection of Barbie DVD. They are very well made and a lot less violent then other children films. At least those don't give her bad dreams she says. A happy Mother
Great buy!! December 25, 2007 John Laue (Indianapolis, In) My grandaughter litterally wore out the VCR tape of this title! I was thrilled that I found it on DVD at Amazon....she continues to watch it time after time.
Good, but........................... December 22, 2007 Jane Doe (USA) I have a son. We've been reading the Nutcracker book and so we watched this on tv. My son got really excited since he knows the story. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. There were enough exciting scenes to keep my son interested. (He wasn't interested in the dancing scenes, though I thought they were beautiful.) Barbie does tend to have a glassy-eyed smile on her face the whole time--she doesn't change expressions enough. But why did I give it two stars? At the end Barbie chooses to stay in the magical land. Staring into the handsome prince's eyes, she says something like, "I thought I wanted to go home, but this feels like home to me." It made me want to vomit! I don't like the message this sends. (She ends up having to go home anyway because her necklace is stolen and she disappears, only to wake up and meet Eric again in real life.) Also Barbie (who plays Clara) is actually the Sugar Plum Fairy, which I thought was weird. I don't think in the real ballet Clara and the Sugar Plum Fairy are the same person.
Not what I was expecting December 22, 2007 pfunksbn (Boston, MA, USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am planning on taking my 4 yo daughter to see the actual ballet, so I was hoping to get her familiar with the music & story beforehand. I borrowed the Barbie movie from a friend of mine who said it was really good. Now I am annoyed because this adaptation is NOTHING like the actual ballet, and now I have to try to explain why the versions are so different. As a stand-alone piece, this movie wouldn't be so bad (although it's as Barbie-saccharine as you'd expect). It's just sad that they are calling it "The Nutcracker," when it really isn't. Apples and oranges.
