A new twist on an old classic, this VH1 production may not look like the Dickens favorite with Alistair Sim, but it's true to its spirit. Vanessa Williams is "Ebony Scrooge," a miserly Diana Ross-type singer. She was once part of 1980s trio Desire, but Marli Jacob (TLC's Chilli) was killed in a car crash and Ebony abandoned Terry for a solo career. While in New York for a "charity" concert--designed to benefit her more than anyone else--Ebony is visited by four spirits. First comes Marli, followed by the Ghosts of Christmas Past (Suddenly Susan's Kathy Griffin), Present (Duran Duran's John Taylor), and Future. The last is a tragically humorous episode of Behind the Music, featuring cameos by Nile Rodgers and Brian McKnight. It's enough to make a diva change her wicked ways--some of them, at any rate. Williams sings several songs, notably "Sleigh Ride" and "Heartquake." --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite version of "A CHRISTmas Carol"   November 30, 2008
Bob Waskiewicz (Wintersville, Ohio United States)
This is one of my favorite CHRISTmas Carol shows ever. The only other one I enjoyed was Rich Littles.
This one is for the music lovers. The singing is great, and the story line is touching, funny, and modern.
Kathy Griffin and Andy Taylor are great as the Angles of CHRISTmas past and present.
Vanessa Williams does a great job being mean in the beginning, then becomming born again at the end.

3 out of 5 stars Flawed But Entertaining Adaptation of Famous Charles Dickens Story   January 7, 2008
Tsuyoshi
Vanessa L. Williams ("Eraser") plays the "Diva," Ebony Scrooge, a superstar singer who is in fact a very nasty lady in her private life. In Christmas she is going to sing a song or two, not for the less fortunate, but for her own purse and her "benefit concert" means another day of work for her entourage she seems exploiting. But on Christmas Eve, ghost of her former singer shows up in her suite, warning that Scrooge will be visited by three ghosts that night.

Modernized version of Charles Dickens classic story, which may look like a mixture of "Christmas Carol" and "Dreamgirls," is fairly enjoyable thanks to its actors. Beautiful Vanessa L. Williams is fun to see as Scrooge. She manages to add some comic touch to her slightly flat character. However, to me her Scrooge sometimes seems a bit too "soft" to be really like "Scrooge" due to her comic acting, which in itself is very good. She may be spoiled, but she is not definitely cold-hearted. And compared with other "Scrooges," she is very young, which means she can start over much easier than original book's Scrooge, whose love, we are painfully aware, left him forever. (Ebony's ex-boyfriend, though living with another woman now, is still by her side.) These factors are not helpful when the film has to make a marked contrast between two Scrooges, before and after the ghosts' visitations.

But I'm not saying this version is not worth watching. Among the scenes of the three ghosts the first one with humorous Ghost of Christmas Past (Kathy Griffin) is the best with the exchange of banter between the two. Vanessa L. Williams also sings songs and "Heartquake" is the most memorable.

"Diva's Christmas Carol" is not the greatest adaptation of the story, but is reasonably amusing enough especially fans of Vanessa L. Williams.
