Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com
This is the desert-island choice of the many versions of A Christmas Carol, with a magnificent, full-bodied portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge by Alastair Sim that leaves everyone else in the dust. Lean and direct, this film's version of the story wastes no time trying to impress viewers with the magical nature of the spirits' visitations. Director Brian Desmond Hurst keeps the focus on Scrooge's life story, beautifully simplifying and underscoring the theme of lost women with a haunting musical refrain from the folk song "Barbara Allen." Sim's commitment to the role is at times astonishing; his Scrooge's Christmas-morning ecstasy is a marvel of giddy technique. Watch for Patrick Macnee (Steed in The Avengers) as the young Jacob Marley--the actor made his screen debut in this 1951 production. --Tom Keogh

Film (and Charles Dickens) fans won't want to miss a single screen. The audio commentary by Marcus Hearn and George Cole adds depth and perspective to Sim's amazing performance, and the groundbreaking special effects for the time. Cole also gives a homey remembrance of working with Sim during World War II and living in the English countryside to avoid the Blitz.

One of the most compelling extras is a short bio of George Mintner, the film's executive producer who would go on to found his own successful distribution company, Renown Pictures. An unlikely film mogul, the British Mintner was shy and bookish, but managed to build a reputable mini-studio in the '50s, out of the Hollywood limelight. He produced mostly B-movies, though after A Christmas Carol (originally titled Scrooge), he produced another Dickens adaptation, The Pickwick Papers. There's a great mini-bio of Dickens, who grew up in the poverty that later fascinated him in his writings. Other extras include the colorized version (what were people thinking back in the '80s?), cast bios, original trailers, and a features that more film companies might want to consider, an optional narration for the blind. Nothing is left out for film fans--God bless us, every one.--A.T. Hurley

5 out of 5 stars Cheers for Charles and Alastair!!!   May 15, 2008
Michael Fiore (New York, NY)
First off, I am a great fan of all Charles Dickens works but I'm particularly fond of "A Christmas Carol". I probably own just about every filmed version of this classic that one can obtain. Of all the versions,(and there are many) this one starring Alastair Sim is far and away the best I've ever seen. Sim's performance is incomparable and brilliant! So much so, that it will be difficult to watch the other films after you've seen this one. (That's saying a lot. The one starring George C. Scott was quite good.)

This release includes the magnificently restored B&W original version, a colorized version of the original, and as a bonus, an earlier B&W film version starring Seymour Hicks!(...gasp...I can hardly go on...). It also includes some other bonus material I've not seen in any edition such as the "Richard Gordon Remembers Minter and Renown Pictures". I'll not restate the all the bonus description here but I will say that while it's not a lavish production, it IS truly fascinating as well as informative.

If you are not a fan, why not buy this release and get the most for your money?

If you are a fan, it is an ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE. There is so much in this release to appreciate I can't possibly put it into this review. Unless a better edition is released, this is truly the ultimate edition.

Alright...alright...I'll say it..."God bless us, everyone..."

--May Christmas always be in your heart.

5 out of 5 stars inspring   March 4, 2008
Robert W. Smith (Virginia, USA)
This remake is an excellent and inspiring dvd. while shared with the whole family, it didn't seem to quite capture the attention of our children like it captivated me. BW and Color option was nice. I watched color before Christmas and then B&W on Christmas eve and will probably do so again next year. Outstanding product!!!

5 out of 5 stars Up-date on 'The Ultimate Scrooge'   February 28, 2008
Raymond J. Pelissier (Marquette, Mi United States)
Just a quick up-date on the DVD of 'A Christmas Carol' (Ultimate Collectors Edition) that was just released. The DVD pkg comes with both the original B&W edition, plus a 'colorized' version which is done VERY well! And as a BONUS, you also get a 1930's version that I haven't seen before starring Sir Seymour Hicks (I thought I had seen them all)! This 'extra' movie is NOT the Reginald Owens flick!. And it's really not bad for it's genre. PLUS you also have a menu of features to have a look at, including some theatrical trailers from both the British and American releases, photo shoots from the movie, scene selections, a 'history' of Renown Pictures Ltd, a bio of George Minter and Charles Dickens, and other interesting tidbits pertaining to this 1951 release. It's a MUST HAVE for your Christmas video collection! I've submitted my review of this movie earlier, so I won't go there again, but this new offering is really special! Don't pass this up!

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas Carol a.k.a. Scrooge   February 13, 2008
Don Oliphant (Langley, B.C., Canada)
As I was growing up every Christmas my family would watch 'A Christmas

Carol' also known as 'Scrooge' ...we found the 1951 version with

Alastair Simms to be the best.

I have always received excellent service from Amazon when ordering online.

Delivery is prompt, you can track your order....

This 'Ultimate Collector's Edition' offers two DVD's in both the original

Black and White as well as the excellent colourized version....

Both are wonderful and may be enjoyed for years to come by all ...

Thank you, Amazon, once again you have provided me with the best service

ever.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Christmas Tale Revamped   February 8, 2008
Suzanne V. Jones (Orlando)
Don't miss this new version of a classic tale. This Christmas favorite has been improved without losing any of its original appeal. You can view in its original black and white or the new colorized production. I still prefer the black and white but I loved the colorized version when my entire family gathered for the Holidays.
