Amazon.com The Nativity Story is a remarkable, if frustratingly restrained, act of imagining the tale of Christ's birth as a flesh-and-blood drama actually set in Israel two millenia ago. Written by Mike Rich (Finding Forrester) and directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen), the film makes very strong impressions in a scene-by-scene way. Beginning with the slaughter (bloodlessly portrayed; this is a PG movie) of Bethlehem's innocents under orders from a paranoid King Herod (a dark and knowing Ciaran Hinds), the film then jumps back a year to the prophecy that informs Zechariah (Stanley Townsend) that his wife, Elizabeth (Shohreh Aghdashloo), will bear a child. Meanwhile, Elizabeth's cousin, the adolescent Mary (Keisha Castle-Hughes), struggles with her family to make ends meet and is promised to the carpenter Joseph (Oscar Isaac). Soon comes word to Mary, via an angel, that she will carry, while still a virgin, the long-awaited Messiah who will liberate the Jews from Herod and his Roman benefactors. Thus begins a detailed account of Joseph and Mary's hard travel to Bethlehem, while three Magi spend months crossing the desert trying to rendezvous with some point below the convergence of three heavenly bodies in the night sky. Hardwicke and Rich anchor all this in period detail, though what proves most moving are relationship nuances, especially the friendship and trust that emerge between Mary and Joseph after he is told in a dream that she speaks truthfully about her miraculous pregnancy. While The Nativity Story should appeal to almost anyone as a straightforward narrative, it is far from a secular version of the familiar Biblical tale, and thus feels a bit stifled. It might have been nice if the film could have breathed a little more with imagination, but The Nativity Story makes up for it by ingeniously weaving hints of things to come, later in Christ's life, into the action. --Tom Keogh

The BEST Bible based movie December 2, 2008 Nancy Rita (Midwest) So often I find Bible based movies have their heart in the right place, but are either not very well acted, or are over-acted. This is the exception. The casting was terrific, from Mary and Joseph and her family, down to King Herod and the Magi. (In a lifetime of watching and enjoying movies, this is the first time I've written down the names of the casting personnel, hoping to write them and compliment them.) It's rare to see a movie that gives you "goose bumps" one minute and has your eyes filling up the next. A subdued but stirring soundtrack is the icing on the cake. Very highly recommended.
The life of Mary & Joseph brought to light. November 25, 2008 Neil Barto This very inspiring movie finally gives a nice backround story to the life that Mary and Joseph had before the birth of Jesus. Through hardtimes and struggles to the journey to Bethlehem where Jesus will be born, bonds will be made and danger will be under foot. A movie for all to see and be inspired by. A much needed backround story is also giving to the Wise Men as well as the mother and father of John the Baptist. The music soars with love and inspiration. Don't miss out on this breathtaking cinematic wonder.

A wonderful way to share what we're really celebrating on Christmas. Historical fiction that seems VERY believable.
Good story November 20, 2008 Patricia Paulraj (CA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Helps to understand how Joseph and Mary would have suffered during those days. A very casual story which is very good.
A faithfull blessing... November 19, 2008 D.J. J.C. (New York, New York Big City of Dreams) Although this movie is a few years old, I just watched it with my wife who is expecting our second daughter, Pai( we got the name from the Whale Rider) in December. I was amazed once again by the presence of Keisha Castle Hughes. She is a beautiful, talented actress that I hope to see in many more movies. The cast was very well done...this is a movie that can restore one's faith and lead you to a place you've been hiding from. This is a beautiful story of the journey and tribulations of Mary and Joseph. Oscar Isaac is very believable as Joseph and really sells the faithful husband to a tee. The movie starts with a sad telling of the "Killing of the Innocents" ordered by the fearful King Herod, who considers himself the "king of the Jews"...and goes thru the Journey of the 3 wise men, Gaspar, Melcior, and Balthasar following the "Star of Bethlaham" to Mary and Joseph's journey to the eventual birth of our lord and savior, the baby Jesus. This is a story of faith, belief & trust. It is said in the movie to Mary that everyone has a gift...This is the story of Mary, Joseph and the greatest gift of all...the birth of Jesus, our Christ.
