Among the many excellent film documentaries on the life and art of Glenn Gould, this is my favorite. So far I've found it only in VHS format, it should be put on DVD. Everything is here. Gould's sustaining family, his father, and especially his aunt, Jessie Griegg, contribute beautifully filmed rememberances of Glenn, of his youth in particular. His aunt's loving ideas are around every corner of this film, and taken in whole create a relief of Gould's inner life unmatched anywhere else. Every single contribution by those close to Gould seems essential to the whole, and critical in forming a mesmerizing portrait of this singular musician. The breadth of scope of the film is amazing, including (as few others do) marvelous footage of his tempestuous character inventions performed in full costume, some marvelous playing, and most rewarding, a beautiful rehearsal with Yehudi Menuhin of Schoenberg's Violin Concerto accompanied by a conversation between Gould & Menuhin as free and tender and wonderful as anything you'll ever see on film. Gould singing and conducting Bach to a field of attentive cows, and an expansive look at his work on radio documentaries (especially his 'Idea of North') are indispensable! Highest recommendation amid a sea of worthy documentary efforts on Glenn Gould. Watch this film, and your love will increase.
