Product Description Jessica the daughter of an impoverished apple farmer still believes in santa claus. So when she comes across a reindeer with an injured leg it makes perfect sense to her to assume that it is prancer who had fallen from a christmas display in town. Studio: Tcfhe/mgm Release Date: 10/14/2008 Starring: Sam Elliott Abe Vigoda Run time: 103 minutes Rating: G Director: John D Hancock
Amazon.com A reindeer doesn't have to fly to be magical to someone, and Prancer succeeds, in its unassuming and plainspoken way, to prove that point. This 1989 family film stars Rebecca Harrell as 9-year-old Jessica, a motherless schoolgirl raised (and largely ignored) by her bereaved and embittered father (Sam Elliot), an apple farmer. While Jessica's dad struggles to keep food on the family table, the little heroine worries over the fate of a wounded reindeer she meets and wistfully identifies as a member of Santa's sled crew. The story may sound overly precious, but the film is grittier and more realistic than that. Far more concerned with wobbly family relationships than gilded escapism, Prancer is a rare family film that can entertain without invoking fluffy enchantment. Followed 12 years later by a sequel, Prancer Returns. --Tom Keogh

Prancer May 29, 2008 Barbara Shores (Birmingham, AL USA) Anything starring Sam Elliot has to be good. lol. It was a lovely movie for Christmas especially.
Made in Michigan January 13, 2008 C. Kortz (Beverly Hills, MI USA) Another Christmas classic. Down to earth and touching performances by Sam Elliott and ensamble. We watch it every year.
DVD is missing two segments; one KEY scene is missing! January 3, 2008 Carol Brandt (Sacramento CA) I have loved watching Prancer every Christmas and finally caved in and bought it on DVD. I have had the VCR version forever. Well, guess WHAT? They have eliminated, for some insane reason, two scenes, one of them being the KEY last scene in the movie!!! What gives?!? Who makes these decisions?! If you haven't ever seen the VCR version you won't miss them BUT....in the middle, Jessica is seen shopping at the mall with her aunt who is buying her a dress for Christmas and she runs into her friend Carol and her mom - before she and Carol had words in the lunch room at school when Carol told heaven didn't exist and then Jessica gets angry with her and asks her then where did her mom go when she died. OK so that wasn't such a key scene but the last one....when they lead Prancer to Antler Ridge and he flies off up into the moon...that is NOT the last scene. Remember at the beginning they show the town officials decorating with the big santa sleigh and reindeers and one of the reindeer falls to the ground and Jessica says it's Prancer and the town guys say they aren't going to fix it? At the end you see Prancer flying back up into the broken decoration and taking his place. I just want to know why they cut that scene out. Anyone know?
Prancer goes to the heart January 2, 2008 Donna L. Dawson (North Wales, PA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Prancer is a sweet Christmas movie. Families can enjoy it together, but have the tissues ready! The little girl, Rebecca Harrell, is special. It's definitely a feel-good movie. Sam Elliott is mmmmmm-good!
Great holiday movie December 23, 2007 A. Royer-Dubois (Albuquerque, NM) This is such a beautiful holiday story, appropriate for all ages. It speaks of the true spirit of Christmas that kids hold in their hearts.
