The Nativity Story is a remarkable, if frustratingly restrained, act of imagining the tale of Christ's birth as a flesh-and-blood drama actually set in Israel two millenia ago. Written by Mike Rich (Finding Forrester) and directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen), the film makes very strong impressions in a scene-by-scene way. Beginning with the slaughter (bloodlessly portrayed; this is a PG movie) of Bethlehem's innocents under orders from a paranoid King Herod (a dark and knowing Ciaran Hinds), the film then jumps back a year to the prophecy that informs Zechariah (Stanley Townsend) that his wife, Elizabeth (Shohreh Aghdashloo), will bear a child. Meanwhile, Elizabeth's cousin, the adolescent Mary (Keisha Castle-Hughes), struggles with her family to make ends meet and is promised to the carpenter Joseph (Oscar Isaac). Soon comes word to Mary, via an angel, that she will carry, while still a virgin, the long-awaited Messiah who will liberate the Jews from Herod and his Roman benefactors. Thus begins a detailed account of Joseph and Mary's hard travel to Bethlehem, while three Magi spend months crossing the desert trying to rendezvous with some point below the convergence of three heavenly bodies in the night sky. Hardwicke and Rich anchor all this in period detail, though what proves most moving are relationship nuances, especially the friendship and trust that emerge between Mary and Joseph after he is told in a dream that she speaks truthfully about her miraculous pregnancy. While The Nativity Story should appeal to almost anyone as a straightforward narrative, it is far from a secular version of the familiar Biblical tale, and thus feels a bit stifled. It might have been nice if the film could have breathed a little more with imagination, but The Nativity Story makes up for it by ingeniously weaving hints of things to come, later in Christ's life, into the action. --Tom Keogh

2 out of 5 stars Movie:The Nativity Story   November 22, 2008

A wonderful way to share what we're really celebrating on Christmas.
Historical fiction that seems VERY believable.

3 out of 5 stars Good story   November 20, 2008

Helps to understand how Joseph and Mary would have suffered during those days. A very casual story which is very good.

5 out of 5 stars A faithfull blessing...   November 19, 2008

Although this movie is a few years old, I just watched it with my wife who is expecting our second daughter, Pai( we got the name from the Whale Rider) in December. I was amazed once again by the presence of Keisha Castle Hughes. She is a beautiful, talented actress that I hope to see in many more movies. The cast was very well done...this is a movie that can restore one's faith and lead you to a place you've been hiding from. This is a beautiful story of the journey and tribulations of Mary and Joseph. Oscar Isaac is very believable as Joseph and really sells the faithful husband to a tee. The movie starts with a sad telling of the "Killing of the Innocents" ordered by the fearful King Herod, who considers himself the "king of the Jews"...and goes thru the Journey of the 3 wise men, Gaspar, Melcior, and Balthasar following the "Star of Bethlaham" to Mary and Joseph's journey to the eventual birth of our lord and savior, the baby Jesus. This is a story of faith, belief & trust. It is said in the movie to Mary that everyone has a gift...This is the story of Mary, Joseph and the greatest gift of all...the birth of Jesus, our Christ.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story.   November 16, 2008

The Nativity Story takes into account the period before the birth of Jesus Christ; it is a review of the biblical narrative of Jesus' birth. The story begins with Mary, a young girl who gets married to Joseph, but it unable to consummate the marriage with him. One night an angel comes to her in her dream and tells her that she will bear the Son of God, knowing this she goes to Zachariah, whose wife comforts her and finds her a safe place for until she is pregnant. When Mary returns to her town, she is shunned by all, but accepted by Joseph, due to the fact that the same angel appears to Joseph and tells him that Mary is pure and innocent. He too, is then shunned by the town; they travel to Bethlehem because of King Herod's orders for people to return to the towns of their birth. Herod did that because of a prophecy foreseeing the coming of the Messiah, the savior, and ultimately his destroyer. However when Herod finds out from the three priests that Messiah is not a grown man, but a baby, he orders his soldiers to kill all the babies in Bethlehem. Meanwhile, Mary and Joseph seek refuge in a stable, where she gives birth to Jesus Christ. The three priests come to the stable bringing the gift of gold, myrrh, and incense. By morning they escape the soldiers' massacre as they depart Bethlehem.
This story is related to Christianity as it speaks of the most influential figures in the religion. It marks the beginning of Christianity and also enforces the presence of God amongst his people and the ideology that Jesus' birth was of a divine nature and also that God is capable of all things. It tells about the struggles that Mary and Joseph faced and how faith in God carried them safely to Bethlehem to fulfill the prophecy of the coming of the Messiah.

5 out of 5 stars What Christmas is all about!   November 13, 2008
House Of Pawz Chilton

Well what I can say about this movie, nothing except it was wonderful and the way it was documented was exceptional. Although I must admit I do on occasions enjoy some of the other movies that are less focused on the true meaning of Christmas. However this particular Nativity Story I would defiantely watch again it displays the true meaning of Christmas. I think all families should watch this movie together maybe it would put everyone, including the children back into perspective of the true meaning of Christmas. In todays society most children believe Christmas is all about Santa Claus, shopping, gifts, wrapping and not to mention food. I have felt for a long time that Christmas is to commercialized, even when people do not have the money they add to their debt. I think this movie did a pretty good job demonstrating the need for everyone, not just families to join together. Ofcourse everybody has seen all sorts of Christmas movies and to me they all seem to follow the same commercialized storyline. I would have to admit I myself thought it would closely resemble most movies today but I was wrong on this one which I have been before. I am actually glad I was wrong because it brought me back to the real reasons we celebrate the Christmas holiday. I was really touched by this movie it displayed the struggles that Mary and Joseph went through. I still have a hard time, as do others Im sure, understanding Marys pregnancy. Although this movie was serious there were some areas it was funny such as the three wise men and their humor. However, Im not 100% sure but I do not believe there were three wise men were known in the Bible but what their three gifts were.
