2 out of 5 stars IT WAKES UP THE WHOLE HOUSE!! What were they thinking?   December 9, 2006

No matter how good/bad this coffee maker works, there is one obnoxious feature that cannot be overlooked. It has an audible signal to let you know when the coffee is done brewing, and again to let you know when the machine will be shutting off a couple of hours later. The alarm is loud and beeps several times in a row, AND CANNOT BE DISABLED. The alarm is loud enough that it wakes up the household, even startles me when I'm sleeping (if I have it set to delayed brew). With this alarm, there is no such thing as waking up before the family to enjoy a quiet cup of coffee. Once coffee is ready, it wakes everyone up. I cannot get over how ridiculous this feature is. Why would I need an alarm to let me know that my coffee is ready 5 minutes later? I don't need it to wake me up. I have an alarm clock for that.Or, I'd rather let the aroma gently wake me. My 4 year old doesn't need to wake up when mom's coffee is ready, especially after she went through the effort to wake up early to enjoy a few minutes in the quiet of the morning.
Okay, that aside, to be fair, here is my assessment of the rest of the machine:
pros:
-makes good coffee
-temperature control is nice -can have coffee warm or hot. Especially nice for me since I don't like it too hot, but when I have company, I can crank it up.
-can adjust brew strength. I tried it and it worked.
-stylish design is pleasant to look at.

cons:
-Need I say more about that obnoxious alarm that cannot be disabled?
-The clock is analog, which would be fine with me, as even in the digital age, I still remember how to tell time, but:
If either of the hands is at a quarter hour point (3,6,9,12), then the hand cannot be seen very well. The clock has lines on it at each quarter hour and the hands sort of disappear when they reach the lines. So, as I'm watching the time in the morning, it's hard to distinguish whether it's 7:15 or 7:30, etc.
-Again, with the clock, it also randomly will flip out, and not tell time at all. The hands will be a big blurr of hand strokes, and be stuck. You have to push buttons on the brew set to get the clock back. Now, mind you, it just does this on its own. At first I thought that I had been accidentally hitting the button, but realized that it had nothing to me. Just to clarify, while the readout is like an analog clock, it is actually electronic, and doesn't have real hands on it. Hope that makes sense.

Overall: The unit does a fine job of making coffee and is rather attractive. The problems seem to be with the bells and whistles (literally). If you don't mind the loud alarm, or a clock that acts funky, then you may like this. For me, it's gotta go! Coffee is a morning treat, but it is impossible to enjoy it alone with this coffee maker.
By the way, I have tried contacting customer support, but to no avail. No response. No email, no phone call (even though they asked for my phone number). I've been patient, but now it's got to go back!

1 out of 5 stars great for 2 months, then it's lousy   December 4, 2005

Bought one of these, and loved the features. Within a month, the unit started malfunctioning...leaking water, brewing half a pot, sneak a cup feature began to leak. Returned the unit for a replacement. After two months, I am having the same problems again with the replacement. You couldn't give me another one of these units...I am going to go buy something else.
