Product Description
At the age of four, Will Martin lost his parents and went to live with his grandparents. The warm memories of life in a small town and the old-fashioned Christmas holidays he and his grandparents shared sustain him still as a young man making his way in the world.

Years later, Will takes a leave of absence from his job in New York City to return home after his grandfather's death to help run the family real estate business. There he discovers something about his grandfather's past that shatters him and the memories of the life he so loved. At dinner one evening, his grandmother tells Will that she has been reading her husband's journals and learned that every Christmas Eve, when she and Will were out doing their traditional last-minute shopping, her husband was seeing a woman named Lillian. This year, his grandmother's Christmas wish is for Will to find out who Lillian is and why Will's grandfather, a seemingly devoted husband, saw Lillian every year for more than twenty-seven years and never mentioned her name.

As Will struggles to salvage the family business and learn the truth about Lillian, he approaches a revelation that teaches him a lesson in the power of kindness, forgiveness, and love to uplift an entire community and touch each life within it.

With an inspiring message wrapped in an irresistible mystery, this heartwarming Christmas tale will be cherished as a wonderful gift of the season by anyone who appreciates the magic of yuletide classics old and new.

4 out of 5 stars Hits all the right notes   November 24, 2008
P. Mann (Los Angeles)

This is the novel on which the movie is based. In it, Will Martin, a big-city business success even though he is in his early thirties, returns to the small town where his grandparents raised him. Will's parents died in a car accident when Will was four, so his grandparents are essentially his parents. Will's grandfather's death is what takes Will back home, largely to decide what to do with the real estate business that the grandfather ran for decades and willed to Will. The plan is fairly simple. Will will spend the time necessary to upgrade the business or sell it, spend time with his grandmother, and then head back to New York with the socialite woman whom he is dating.

From this premise, the majority of the plot should be obvious--and it is. However, there is another part. Will's grandmother has asked for one gift. She and her husband kept journals for nearly all of their married life, and cryptic references to a Lillian in the grandfather's journals have piqued her curiosity. She asks Will to find out who Lillian is--or was.

"The Christmas Wish" is probably everything one could ask for from a short Christmas novel. There seems to be a bit too much going on, though, for Will's Scrooge-like metamorphosis seems rushed. We welcome it, to be sure, since it is the point of the novel, but it still rings slightly hollow. I don't think most readers will care too much. I didn't. But I did notice it.

5 out of 5 stars A heart-warming book with a suspenseful plot   December 22, 2007
William J. Skabelund (Chandler, AZ USA)
A wonderful book that sends you on a mystery filled christmas wish. The book will keep you reading for hours. I read this book every Christmas to remind me of virtues such as love, forgiving, and living a Christ-like life. I also love the movie by Debbie Reynolds and Neal Patick Harris on DVD.

4 out of 5 stars A Family Oriented Story   November 10, 2004

This was surely one of the best Christmas family oriented book I've ever read! It had morals and values to each and every page. This story tells of a young man around his early 30's who gave up his Wall Street life to help take over the family real estate business due to his grandfather's sudden death. His sense of determination to find out who the mysterious "Lillian" is keeps the reader itching to turn the page. You will find that the ending will surprise you! I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a little uplifting to their holiday spirit.
