4 out of 5 stars Engaging   December 19, 2008

The characters are enjoyable and the "breakthrough" for the heroine was poignant, but her actions and inattention to what caused their issues was not that believable - suddenly she "forgot" her intentions behind that necklace? c'mon. Still, if you can get past that it was worth the time to get to know these two.

4 out of 5 stars Some what Sad - but a good book over all....   November 20, 2008
C. Brigden (Minot, ND)
Here is the premise Elizabeth Cummings is an 18 year old American heiress who her parents offered Duke Randall Blackmore a huge amount of money to marry their daughter. He travels to American to find a love sick teenager who doesn't want to marry him - but he needs the money and he finds that he could potential love her. Elizabeth is very immature through most of the book - I had to remind myself she was a VERY sheltered teenager but I thought the Duke was WONDERFUL! I really liked the connection their best friends - looking forward to her next book.

"Marry Christmas" could have gotten five stars but I hate the title. Thank goodness the book rises above it. I loved both Rand and Elizabeth. The frustration of their both wanting the same thing and not knowing it was deliciously page-turning. I have read other books by Jane Goodger and they are always satisfying. Give her a try.

Loved this book from the first page. I've never read anything by this author before, but I'm glad I took the chance and picked it up.

4 out of 5 stars engaging historical   October 11, 2008

In Newport, Rhode Island heiress Elizabeth Cummings is appalled with her socialite climbing mother. Her mom is pushing for her daughter to marry the Duke of Bellingham over Christmas. Elizabeth is resistant to wed a stranger just for his title especially since she loves someone else.

The Duke Randall Blackmore loathes the idea of marrying for money especially an American social climber. However, he needs her Yankee dollars so he agrees to wed Elizabeth. Her mother arranges for Elizabeth and Randall to meet. He is stunned by her beauty and intelligence and wants her as his wife even if she was a pauper. He must wean her off this rival so he starts a seduction in order to marry his beloved by the holiday season.

Although the theme of an arranged marriage has been used a zillion times especially with aristocratic England, Jane Goodger refreshes the concept with an engaging historical as the lead male knows he must convince his reluctant beloved they are a loving match in spite of an arrangement. The story line is a lighthearted frolic as Randall conspires with Elizabeth's mom to marry her daughter by Christmas. Fans will enjoy his missteps starting with the selection of his ally to make a woman who says no his duchess.
