YOU THINK YOU KNOW ABOUT CHRISTMAS? November 27, 2008 D. Blankenship (The Ozarks) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
1001 Christmas Facts and Fancies by Alfred Carol Hottes was first published in 1937 and has (lucky for us) gone through several reprints. The work being reviewed here is the 1944 edition. If you want to know about Christmas, if you have questions about Christmas or if you are just into trivia in general, then this is the book you need on your shelf! It is one of the most comprehensive and complete works covering the subject of Christmas available between two covers. Now this is not a children's book, although the information contained on its pages is certainly pertinent to children every where. The volume I have contains 308 pages, including a very nice and usable index and covers every aspect of this particular holiday. The first chapter or section of the book contains the story of Christmas, and blends with the next section, which covers the Gospel Story and from there covers the main characters and personalities of this Christian event. This is not to say that this is a Christian book, per se though. Every aspect, historical and current of the event is covered and covered in detail. Needless to say, I cannot list the 1001 facts and fantasies covered in the book here, but included in the book is a history of the Christmas tree, greenery, what constituted a mediaeval Christmas Dinner including customs, manners, menu, traditions. The author later discusses, at length, the role of hymns and carols, Christmas Cards, tree legends, other Christmas legends, old wives' tales, foods from around the world and Christmas traditions is quite a number of different countries. Did you know that if you eat a raw egg before eating anything else on Christmas morning, you will be able to carry heavy weights? Did you know that when a Bohemian wife burns a Christmas cake she believes she will die within a year? Did you know that in England, bread baked on Christmas will never become moldy? Do you know how to say "Merry Christmas" in 27 different languages? This work is also filled with various recipes from around the world, all having to do with Christmas. Different crafts are discussed as well as gift giving and various Christmas symbols. Legends, songs, customs, and traditions...it is all here. For the true lover of Christmas, for those with a curious mind; this work is for you and certainly a must! Don Blankenship The Ozarks
