3 out of 5 stars 'Tis the Season...   November 6, 2003

Although it's a bit early in the season, I read through Christmas on Ganymede and Other Stories, which I picked up at Half-Price Books this weekend.

As you'd expect, it's a collection of SF stories that have something to do with Christmas (or at least, that time of the year). Here's some of the stories I found most interesting:

* "A Midwinter's Tale" - Michael Swanwick. Told in flashback form, a the protagonist recalls how he learned of the association between man and the larls. While it adheres the least to the theme, still quite intriguing.

* "Happy Birthday, Dear Jesus" Frederick Pohl. A logical extension of our current consumeristic attitude towards Christmas, with a culture clash thrown in.

* "The War Beneath the Tree" Gene Wolfe. Possibly an inspiration for both Toy Story and Teddy from A.I.

* "The Christmas Present" Gordon R. Dickson. The best (IMHO) of the several stories in this collection that deal with teaching aliens about Christmas, although "O Little Town of Bethlehem II" (Robert F. Young) comes close.

I enjoy themed collections of SF short stories - and will be adding this to my permanent library.
