Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Yearly Harvest A True Story of Christmas by Ryan Callaway Jin Duyen, who often writes articles for prominent magazines, is assigned to do a story on the origins of Christmas' many traditions. After some research, she traces them back to Selah, a remote town in the Midwest. Jin travels there in hopes of finding something interesting for her article, and finds so much more. Amy Carson, a private investigator from a nearby town, decides to look into several cases of missing children which have gone unsolved. The authorities have ceased their own searches, so with little else to do during the holiday season, she heads to Selah as well. Oddly, the residents of Selah aren't caught up in the festivities that the rest of the world is taking part in. Jin and Amy soon discover that Christmas holds a much darker meaning here... one that pitches them into the same terror that had held Selah captive for years.

One of the main characters, Jin Duyen, is a young lady who specializes in revealing the dark origins of seemingly innocent things, like fairy tales and myths. In Yearly Harvest she's trying to find something similar behind Christmas, and research brings her to the town of Selah where - oddly enough, there are no Christmas lights, decorations, or any of the holiday's festivities. Instead most of the people are unwilling to talk, nervous, or openly hostile when the subject is brought up.

On top of that, there's also an investigator, Amy, hired by a woman whose niece lived in Selah with her parents. They visited the aunt every year after Christmas. Then, one year, the niece was gone without explanation. There are other missing persons cases where the trails end in Selah.

In many ways it's a cautionary tale, as the family Jin is staying with, and even Amy repeatedly warn Jin not to dig too deep. The story really takes a creepy turn when she is given a map of the town, showing an X marked toward the middle of a forest. Despite the warnings, Jin travels there anyway, and has an encounter that is sure to stick with you long after you put this book down. She makes it out, but has now invited the "curse", as some call it, to haunt her, and her loved ones. In Selah it seems nowhere it safe.

Overall, Yearly Harvest is miles better and more creative than the film "Black Christmas." Callaway manages to make even the most innocent Christmas traditions frightening and macabre. The realistic likable characters with faults, the quiet, mysterious town of Selah, and the secret some of the locals are willing to kill to hide - all make for a very chilling read.
