Ten-year-old Miguel and his family are homeless after a fire destroyed their house and his father's livelihood. While he wanders the streets looking for food for his mom and baby sister, he is protected by his mysterious friend, Michael, a strikingly large and commanding being who has a knack of always appearing just when Miguel needs him.
Meanwhile, Jimmy and Amy Franklin are preparing for what may be their last Christmas together. Jimmy has a serious heart problem and it too far down on the transplant waiting list. Despite his fragile condition, he is still committed to his volunteer work of playing Santa for the area’s poor and homeless children. He and Amy are also working on a proposal to present to the city counsel. They want to turn an old warehouse into a housing and job-training center for the homeless. The mayor and his evil mail-order bride try to thwart the plan, but in the end the Franklins win over the council. All they need is a good foreman to head the job.
Michael, (who turns out to be an angel), orchestrates the meeting of the Franklins with Miguel and his family. As they generously share their Christmas with them, Jimmy finds out that Miguel’s father, Joe, is a journeyman carpenter who would be perfect for the job. That night, Jimmy suffers a fatal heart attack, but Miguel convinces the angel to give him a second chance at life. Jimmy is brought back to life, cured and able to see his dream come to fruition.
