Beautiful artwork, disappointing message January 6, 2009 SunTrish (Durham, NC USA) Not every child needs candy or a gift in their advent calendar to make it wonderful and this calendar has beautiful and amusing drawings behind each door. This is a very secular calendar, however, and not even one drawing is based on anything to do with the Christmas story. Even the last door on the 24th, where one usually expects to see a manger scene, just has a drawing of a baby polar bear. If your idea of Christmas is that it's just a day for gifts, then this is a beautiful calendar, but if you think the reason for Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus, this calendar will be disappointing.
Not about chocolate! December 31, 2008 Elspeth 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Advent is about magical anticipation, not candy! Opening the window to see the surprise is quite exciting to children who haven't been bred to equate "exciting" with "tangible." We have a lovely collection of advent calendars and even my teens take turns with the little ones.
Disappointed January 7, 2008 Jim Peterson (Alaska) 7 out of 15 found this review helpful
When I ordered this advent calendar I presumed it was like most of the ones I have purchased in the past. That is when you open each window there is a chocolate treat for each day. Much to my disappointment this calendar only has cheezy little cartoon pictures behind each door. Save your money and don't buy this one folks...
Piece of cardboard December 10, 2007 P. L. M. D. (South Jersey) 9 out of 16 found this review helpful
Okay, now the advent calendars I remember as a child had little candies or toys or something in each day. This is a piece of cardboard with little cardboard doors that open to pictures of toys. That's it. No story with it, no treats. It's just not that exciting. It's a nice picture, but $7 for a piece of cardboard seems a little high. If someone has to pay shipping on it, it's EXTRAORDINARILY expensive for what you get. Go pick up a chocolate advent calendar at Walgreen's -- even with the not so great chocolates, it's more exciting than this.
Beautiful February 10, 2007 C. Rose (USA) 9 out of 12 found this review helpful
The calendar is beautiful. It also has a good thickness to it, so I expect it should last for quite a few years.
