Not for Young Children September 15, 2008 D. A. Riley (PA) 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
I am a kindergarten teacher and ordered this book to use with my class. Based on the Amazon description and recommendation for ages 4 to 8, I was expecting a fictional book that told a story about Gingerbread Land that I could tie in with all of my other Gingerbread Man stories. However, the book is not suited for this. It is a beautiful coffee table book that is designed more for adults and possibly older children. Each page contains a description of what is happening in Gingerbread Land, but the language is far above a 4 or 5 year old. It also contains factual information on the history of lollipops, all about sugar, the history of Christmas carols, etc. There are also small removable recipe and craft booklets and cards included on each page. This is a wonderful book, but don't expect it to be a read-aloud story for a younger child.
Gingerbread but so much more January 1, 2008 Sharon L. Rush 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I loved this book!!I own many, many gingerbread books but this is sooo much more. If shared with a slightly older child(ren) you could take advantage of the many recipes and crafts and make it a true Christmas expereince. HOW FUN!!!! A younger child would enjoy the pictures but it is not intended for a toddler or young preschooler as the text is creatively elaborate. I think it could be a really fun book to share as a grandma and then use the activities as reading-re-enforcers. I felt it was worth every penny and LOVE IT as an adult. It will be put out every year for young and old to enjoy with my gingerbrerad-themed Christmas!!!
