Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
With the same incomparable style and warm, inviting voice that have made her beloved by millions of readers far and wide, New York Times bestselling author Fannie Flagg has written an enchanting Christmas story of faith and hope for all ages that is sure to become a classic.
Deep in the southernmost part of Alabama, along the banks of a lazy winding river, lies the sleepy little community known as Lost River, a place that time itself seems to have forgotten. After a startling diagnosis from his doctor, Oswald T. Campbell leaves behind the cold and damp of the oncoming Chicago winter to spend what he believes will be his last Christmas in the warm and welcoming town of Lost River. There he meets the postman who delivers mail by boat, the store owner who nurses a broken heart, the ladies of the Mystic Order of the Royal Polka Dots Secret Society, who do clandestine good works. And he meets a little redbird named Jack, who is at the center of this tale of a magical Christmas when something so amazing happened that those who witnessed it have never forgotten it. Once you experience the wonder, you too will never forget A Redbird Christmas.

This was my first Fannie Flagg novel. I thoroughly enjoyed this light-hearted tale, and would highly recommend it.

This is a nice "feel good" story in which Fanny Flagg suggests that simple, wholesome, small town values among caring friends can bring about healing of both physical and emotional woes. As in all of Fanny Flagg's stories, there is a lot of humor and some quirky characters. It may not have enough excitement for young folks but others will get a nice "warm, fuzzy" feeling. It makes a great Christmas gift.

REDBIRD CHRISTMAS is a story about a terminally ill Chicago man Oswald who travels to a very small Alabama town to be in a warmer climate where he will live out his medical death sentence from emphysema.

The local store owner Roy finds a baby Redbird that he nursed back to health. Jack the Redbird is allowed to jump from counter to counter in the store pecking open packages and pecking holes in tomatoes etc that are for sale. Majority of the towns folk love Jack.

One Day a poor little girl Patsy comes into the store fascinated by Jack the redbird and she keeps on coming in every day to see and play with Jack. The town is so worried about her bedraggled clothing and appearance they start to look after her and will do everything and anything to make her happy.

Oswald, Patsy and Roy become intertwined in each other lives and the whole town is a town that everyone would want to live in. Neighbours REALLY caring about neighbours.

This story is a light, caring, feel good story that is now high on my top choices of novels for everyone to consider. If only more people could be as lovely as these people in this story.

I recently listened to the unabridged audio version of this book which was read by the author, Fannie Flagg. Her friendly and warm voice lent itself perfectly to the dialogue, time and place.

The story is about Oswald T. Campbell, a lonely man who is in very poor health. His doctor advised him, that for health reasons, to leave Chicago and visit a town in the southern part of Georgia, called Lost River. There, the story really begins!

The friendly people, the warm climate are all rather magical to Oswald. He makes friends, finds a hobby and starts to feel good about life. The local store owner had saved the life of an injured bird. The bird, called Jack is a beautiful Cardinal. Jack becomes the pet of the town and is always in the store to greet the visitors. When a small girl is deserted by some drifters, the town adopts her too. The child walks with a painful limp and is very shy. She, too falls in love with the little redbird and seems to be coming out of her shell. Of course, there's a lot more that happens in this story!

I was thoroughly enchanted by the warm, wonderful and sometimes wacky characters and of course by the theme of the story itself!

I found this book at the library in audio form and enjoyed listening to it immensely. I would recommend it as a Christmas gift for anyone who enjoys a good story. And if you are into audio books--this one is well done and I have given it as a gift several times and been told it was enjoyed by others.
