5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Christmas book   December 22, 2008

This book is fabulous for both the young and old. It is a wonderful description of the true meaning of the holidays. It is one of my five year old twins new favorite books. They want to read it every night. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Using Cookies as Lessons for Life   December 9, 2008
Sacramento Book Review (Sacramento, CA)
Finally, a book about values! Krouse Rosenthal uses cookies as a child-relateable topic that kids will understand while learning about all the important values in our society. She teaches things like perseverance, frustration, and the joys of sharing. Dyer did an excellent job with whimsical illustrations portraying these wonderful lessons. This still makes it feel like a children's book, even though they're learning such valuable lessons. At this day and age in our society, it seems we have lost the meaning of Christmas. Children tend to think it's mostly about them and what presents they're getting this year. The best lesson given in this book is about sharing and giving to others. If your child gets anything out of this book, hopefully it's that. Besides, a cookie is much better when you give to someone you love.

3 out of 5 stars Nice but may not hold child's attention   December 5, 2008
Feathered Quill Book Reviews (Goshen, MA)

Christmas Cookies: Bite-Size Holiday Lessons is exactly what the title implies: one or two sentence lessons children can learn from baking cookies. Each page of this book has one word in large, bold letters followed by an explanation of that word. By using the traditions surrounding the holidays and the process of baking cookies to illustrate each lesson, the book attempts to explain these words at a level young children should understand.

Most of the words and lessons that are taught are well-chosen and the concepts presented are ones all kids should be introduced to. Examples include: "Gracious means putting out a plate for our special guest," with a picture of a child getting a plate of cookies ready for Santa, and "Family means enjoying our cookies together." However, some of the words such as `Reciprocate,' `Moderation,' and `Perseverance,' are pretty big words for such young readers and I suspect they may lose interest on these pages. Still, the pictures are charming and may be enough to carry the book through the more difficult word pages.

Quill says: a nice book although it may not hold your child's attention until the end.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite children's book   November 19, 2008

If you have ever grappled with explaining an abstract concept to children, like "tradition" "disappointed" or the all-important "sharing," then Amy Rosenthal and Jane Dyer's "cookie books" are for you. Through the simple analogies of baking and eating cookies (something many children can relate to), Rosenthal explains those sometimes difficult-to-understand ideas/values like gratitude, appreciative, gracious, and many more. Jane Dyer's soft, expressive child/animal illustrations complement and illustrate the concepts. The "Christmas Cookies" book includes holiday-related words like joy, believe, celebrate and peace. Both of these titles are excellent choices for a child 3-6 years of age. I have donated both to my local public library and have given many children the books as gifts. I hope Amy Rosenthal and Jane Dyer are baking more cookie books for the future!

As a mother of 5 and grandmother of one, I have read and enjoyed volumes of children's books. Amy Krouse Rosenthal's books have an ingenious and significant way of teaching children essential character traits. She skillfully, yet simply, represents these concepts of the heart by relating them to every child's clear understanding and love of cookies.
I applaud the author and illustrator! I wholeheartedly recommend these
2 books. EVERY child should own them! I hope Amy has more in the works!!!!
