Amazon.com Review Although most grownups know Roddy Doyle better from his Barrytown comic novels (including The Commitments), he's thankfully returned for a children's book follow-up to his ridiculously ridiculous The Giggler Treatment. What's the cast of kids from that nimble-witted book leaving on the mantel for Santa? One of their mother's cans of Guinness. Oh, and 27 cheese sandwiches (minus the crusts). Doyle's decidedly Irish, self-referential silliness gets a workout on Christmas Eve as Robbie and Jimmy Mack find themselves "very bored and very excited" waiting for Christmas Day. They leave a carrot on the mantel, too, for Rudolph, but soon discover that the red-nosed reindeer's on strike. ("Look, man, next year, maybe," Rudolph tells Santa. "It's a mid-life thing. I need a rest.") So it's soon up to Rover, the smartest dog around, to save the day and lead Santa's sleigh. How smart is Rover? He's got "a brain the size of Africa tucked into a head the size of a baked potato." And like all dogs, Rover "pooed, yes, but then he sold his poo.... The fact is very few dogs are brainy enough to sell their poo." Few holiday trips could possibly promise to be this fun and funny. In addition to throwaway references to poo and wee, Harry Potter, and "diet water," Doyle often talks straight to the reader ("Chapter Six--The Teenage Years: I don't want to be Chapter Six. I never asked to be Chapter Six.... You don't understand my music"). Captain Underpants fans and like-minded kids (and grownups) will appreciate such respect for their intelligence--and their sense of humor. (Ages 8 and older) --Paul Hughes

More adventures from Roddy's Rover July 29, 2008 A. Rinquest (Johannesburg, Gauteng South Africa) Roddy Doyle became an instant hit with my nine year old (and thirteen year old) when we read 'The Giggler Treatment' together. A story whose central theme revolved around Mr Mack stepping into a pile of freshly laid poo and how Rover came to the rescue. Consequently we immediately ordered the other two books in the series and we were not disappointed (they could have been longer). What is most enjoyable is how the characters all manage to have a say in how the story will proceed. One moment we are with Rover and the kids, the next moment the author (presumably Roddy is taking a coffee break while the story 'idles' and then suddenly Rover is egging the author to get back to his desk and continue writing. Wildy unpredictable - like Milligan but original. Highly recommended by both kids and myself

Rover Saves Christmas is about a dog named Rover who lives in Dublin with his friends. One day an elf showed up looking for Rover and told him that Santa needed him. So him , his friends, and the elf were off. when they got there they left emediatly. The rest of the night was incredable and they had a blast. I think this is a great book for grades kindergarden through third.
"Bum-Bum" Rover Saves Christmas " Who are You?" March 7, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Do you like comedy, or laughing so hard you cry? If yes, read Rover Saves Christmas by: Roddy Doyle. If no, go find some other book. What happen when Rudolph gets sick on Chtistmas Eve? Rover saves the day, with a little help from his friends. Can a dog make it all around the world in one night? I think Roddy Doyle wrote this book because he nedded a good laugh. This is the best book ever. It's so funny ( like S.N.L. for kids funny .) Even my mom likes it. So what are you waiting for? Go buy the book and read it! P.S. : Read every page even 159. P.S.S : Who are you? Who are you? Whhhooo aaarrreee yyyoooouu?! P.S.S.S. : Bum - Bum! Bum - Bum!! Buuummm - Buummm!!! You have to read the book to understand this.
