Product Description
Why spend tons of money on humdrum designer duds when it's possible to revamp a piece you already own to create a guaranteed original that looks, fits, and feels just the way it should? Rip It! shows how simple and fun it can be to transform a tired wardrobe into hip, one-of-a-kind new looks without spending a dime. Elissa Meyrich, owner and teacher at the popular New York sewing boutique Sew Fast Sew Easy, has been passing her sewing secrets and style tips on to students for years. Now she shows beginners and experienced sewers everywhere how to customize pieces found at cheap chain stores, thrift shops, or the far reaches of a closet and create fabulous new designs. Rip It! includes everything you need -- basic sewing and alteration information; quick sewing methods; where to find supplies; advice on which fabrics to use; important cutting rules; plus illustrated layouts, drawings, and instructions that show you how to: - Jazz up old t-shirts with stretch lace and zippers
- Turn faded, falling-apart jeans into a hot new denim skirt
- Change a pullover into a cute cardigan
- Make a thrift-store dress into a hipster skirt
- Create an instant poncho
Cool, crafty, and brimming with creative ideas, Rip It! is a hands-on handbook that will show you how to give your clothes sass, sparkle, and your own signature style.

Waste of money November 23, 2008 A. Tiffany (NY, NY USA) Book shows you how to make holes in your clothes and stitch patches on. I'm not sure it was necessary to publish a book on how to get the trailer park look. I was hoping to get great ideas on how to alter clothes I buy at second hand stores so they fit me better. And too just cool alterations to make, but this was not the case. I wish I would have looked at customer images submitted under this title before I bought the book bc this will give you a good idea of what the book is about- making holes in your clothes.
Great FUN book! Missleading reviews. November 10, 2008 Shaneese Brown (Brooklyn NY) I bought this book after seeing it at a DIY fair. A booth had projects set up from this book that came out terrific. It has some great tricks for mending clothes as well. It taught me to hem my pants and keep the original hem, that tip alone has saved me more $ than the price of this book. It costs me $12 a pair of pants to be hemmed. I'm 5'4 and have to hem all my pants. My neice loves this book and I think it's a little more her speed being 15 and creative, she likes to embellish and recreate her clothes. I enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who knows a little about sewing and looking for something fun and different. I also have Generation T but the projects in that book aren't geared towards sewing but cutting and shredding. I don't agree with some of these negative reveiws listed. There are great projects and creative ideas in this book.
I loved this book!!! June 13, 2008 S. Rowell (New York, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The first time I sewed anything was in middle school shop class - we made this hideous blouse that I never wore because I didn't like the material or the pattern. I decided to get back into sewing because while I didn't like the end result, I loved the process. I have a sewing machine coming and I can't wait to get started. I want to try at least a few of the techniques I saw in this book. Imagine being able to tailor make your own clothes! I HIGHLY recommend this book.
Misleading title June 11, 2008 S. Stevens (Seattle, WA USA) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I was disappointed in this book. There is some good basic information, but very little "deconstruction". A majority of the projects are merely adding decorations or embellishments to garments. Large print and a lot of white space on the pages make the book appear more substantial than what it actually contains. There are no pictures of actual examples, which would be helpful. Many of the projects are dated and uninspired. All-in-all, I am sorry I bought this book.
learned one thing May 25, 2008 Maria Oliveira (Tamarac, FL USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was excited about this book, I checked it out from my local library, I was really not impressed. I have been sewing on and off for 3 years and I was looking for ideas to refresh the clothes in my closet. I live in Miami, the projects they suggested were way too basic and no way would I walk around miami wearing anything this book told me to do. The only thing I learned, or re-learned cuz I had forgotten was how to make your jeans shorter but keep the original hem line. So I'm really glad I didn't just buy this book.
